NHS Services – Rights and Responsibilities

Understanding Your Rights and Responsibilities

While the NHS is here to care for you, healthcare works best when it is a two-way street built on mutual respect. Navigating your rights can sometimes feel like a maze, so we have simplified things to help you understand what you can expect from us and what we, in turn, ask of you. This ensures that every patient at our practice receives the best possible care in a safe and supportive environment.

The Patient Rights (Scotland) Act

The Patient Rights (Scotland) Act 2011 established the legal right for all patients to receive healthcare that is patient-focused and considers their individual needs and preferences. It ensures that your views are heard regarding your treatment and that you are treated with dignity at all times.

The Charter of Patient Rights and Responsibilities

The Charter summarises what you are entitled to when you use the NHS in Scotland and what is expected of you in return. It covers key areas such as access to services, communication, participation in your care, and privacy

Your Rights

As a patient of this practice, you have the right to:

  • Access Quality Care: Receive healthcare that is appropriate to your clinical needs.
  • Be Informed: Receive clear information about your condition, treatment options, and any potential risks.
  • Privacy and Confidentiality: Have your personal health information kept secure and private.
  • Feedback and Complaints: Share your experiences or make a formal complaint without it affecting your future care. The [Patient Advice and Support Service (PASS)] provides free, independent help if you need support with this process.
  • Support: Use an interpreter or an advocate if you have communication difficulties.

Your Responsibilities

To help us provide the most efficient service possible, we ask that you:

  • Provide Accurate Information: Tell us as much as you can about your health and any medications you are taking.
  • Keep Appointments: Please arrive on time. If you can no longer attend, cancel as early as possible so we can offer the slot to another patient.
  • Treat Staff with Respect: We operate a zero-tolerance policy regarding violence or abuse. Please be polite to our receptionists, nurses, and doctors.
  • Follow Advice: Discuss your treatment plan with your clinician and follow the agreed-upon advice to improve your health outcomes.
  • Update Your Details: Let us know immediately if you change your name, address, or phone number.
